The still-hidden calendar

(San Francisco Chronicle 11/30/04) -- Background: After the Nov. 2 passage of Proposition 59, which strengthened California's open records law, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said he would release his first complete calendar since taking office. "We're going to let the public see," he said on Nov. 12 while visiting Japan. "It's not like we've been meeting with terrorists or anything.".

What happened: On Nov. 17, Schwarzenegger's office sent a letter to the California First Amendment Coalition saying that within 35 days "at the earliest" he would release full details of his schedule since November 2003. But he has yet to give any indication of when he will begin releasing details of his current schedule. His office, which continues to issue opaque daily press releases saying he is in "private meetings," told us "the exact process is still being worked out."

-- What you can do: You can e-mail Schwarzenegger at governor@governor. ca.gov. Tell him he should keep his word to make state government more transparent and immediately begin releasing more informative daily schedules.
